Supreme Court asks Election Commission to extend deadline for submission of SIR enumeration forms
The Supreme Court has asked the Election Commission of India to extend the deadline for submitting Special Intensive Revision enumeration forms, stressing the importance of giving voters adequate time to ensure their names are correctly included in electoral rolls.
The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission of India to extend the date for submission of Special Intensive Revision enumeration forms, highlighting concerns related to voter inclusion and fairness in the electoral process. The court observed that voters must be given sufficient opportunity to participate in the revision exercise without undue pressure of timelines.
During the hearing, the court noted that the SIR process plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of electoral rolls. Any shortcomings in the exercise could result in eligible voters being left out, which would undermine the democratic process. The judges stressed that administrative convenience cannot override the fundamental right to vote.
The Election Commission informed the court about the steps taken to carry out the enumeration process, including outreach measures and deployment of officials at the ground level. However, the court was of the view that practical difficulties faced by voters, especially in rural and densely populated areas, needed to be taken into account.
The Supreme Court emphasised that extending the deadline would not weaken the integrity of the electoral process. Instead, it would strengthen public confidence by ensuring that all eligible citizens have a fair chance to verify and submit their details. The court also pointed out that voter awareness and accessibility are essential for the success of such large scale exercises.
The direction comes amid reports that many voters were unable to complete the submission process within the earlier timeline due to lack of information, documentation issues or logistical challenges. Civil society groups had raised concerns that strict deadlines could disproportionately affect marginalised communities.
The Election Commission has been asked to take the court’s observations into consideration and announce a revised deadline accordingly. Officials are also expected to enhance awareness efforts so that voters are better informed about the process and requirements.
The matter highlights the judiciary’s focus on protecting voter rights and ensuring inclusive electoral practices. The court’s intervention is likely to provide relief to voters and help improve the accuracy and credibility of electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections.
