WV Raman says India’s young team needs better wickets and stability to rebuild confidence
Former India women’s team coach WV Raman has said that the national men’s side is in a clear transition phase and needs good batting wickets to rebuild confidence. He explained that young players cannot grow on overly challenging pitches and that India must create conditions that allow the team to settle after recent Test defeats.
WV Raman addressed India’s current struggles in Test cricket following the recent series loss and pointed out that the team is undergoing both personnel and strategic changes. According to him, many of India’s younger batters are still developing their game and need supportive conditions to succeed. He stressed that wickets which are too unpredictable create doubt, damage confidence and hinder long term growth.
Raman noted that historically India relied on strong home conditions and experienced players who could dominate spin friendly or uneven surfaces. With senior players stepping aside and youngsters finding their feet, he believes the approach must adapt. Good, balanced wickets will help emerging batters spend time at the crease, build technique and learn how to handle pressure.
He also spoke about the importance of stability in team selection. Constant chopping and changing, he said, prevents players from understanding their roles and stops the team from forming a core group that can grow together. He emphasised that a rebuilding phase requires patience, clarity and supportive planning.
Raman concluded that India has the talent to bounce back but needs a combination of consistent selections, better surfaces and sensible long term thinking. He added that confidence is central to performance and that it will return once players get the right game environment and backing from the management.
