India launches Operation Sagar Bandhu to support cyclone-hit Sri Lanka, airlifts 12 tonnes of relief material
India has launched Operation Sagar Bandhu to help Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah devastated several regions. The Indian Air Force has transported twelve tonnes of humanitarian supplies and NDRF teams have been deployed to assist with rescue and relief operations.
India activated a major humanitarian initiative named Operation Sagar Bandhu after Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread damage across Sri Lanka. The cyclone brought heavy rain, flooding and strong winds that left thousands stranded and in urgent need of assistance. Responding swiftly, the Indian government approved immediate support to help the affected population.
The Indian Air Force airlifted twelve tonnes of essential relief material including medicines, food packets, tents, water purifiers and emergency supplies. The aircraft carrying the aid landed in Sri Lanka where local authorities, along with Indian officials, began distributing the materials to areas hit hardest by the cyclone.
In addition to relief items, India has also deployed National Disaster Response Force teams to support on-ground rescue operations. These specialised units are helping evacuate stranded residents, clear debris and restore access to isolated communities. Their expertise in handling natural disasters has proven crucial in stabilising the situation.
Officials stated that the relief mission is part of India’s long standing commitment to support neighbouring nations during crises. Operation Sagar Bandhu is an extension of earlier humanitarian efforts and reflects India’s policy of providing timely and coordinated assistance in the Indian Ocean region.
The Sri Lankan government has expressed gratitude for India’s rapid response and collaborative approach. Relief work is ongoing and more support may follow depending on the evolving situation on the ground.
