Cyclone Ditwah triggers heavy rain and red alerts across Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh
Cyclone Ditwah has intensified over the Bay of Bengal and triggered red alerts across Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rainfall, powerful winds and dangerous sea conditions have prompted widespread warnings as the system moves closer to the coast.
Cyclone Ditwah continues to strengthen in the southwest Bay of Bengal bringing severe weather to multiple coastal regions. The India Meteorological Department reported that the cyclone has already intensified and is expected to bring extremely heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Puducherry and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh. Authorities remain on high alert as the system gradually approaches land.
Chennai and surrounding districts have started experiencing strong winds and intermittent heavy showers since early morning. Waterlogging has been reported in several low lying areas and civic teams have been deployed to clear drains and ensure uninterrupted water flow. Coastal communities have been advised to move to safer locations if necessary.
Puducherry and Cuddalore have been placed under red alert due to the likelihood of intense rain and potential flooding. Fishermen have been instructed to completely avoid venturing into the sea as waves are expected to rise sharply with dangerous turbulence. Ports in the region have also halted fishing and small boat activities.
In Andhra Pradesh, districts such as Nellore and Prakasam are preparing for strong winds and heavy showers. Disaster management teams have been stationed in vulnerable coastal pockets with evacuation facilities on standby. Schools in several districts have announced closures to ensure public safety.
IMD forecasts suggest that the cyclone will continue to intensify over the next few hours before curving towards the coast. While the exact landfall point remains uncertain the department warns that the storm’s impact will be significant regardless of its final trajectory.
With emergency teams, NDRF units and state authorities on full alert residents are urged to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
