Kolkata Metro to install 1678 high tech cameras across Blue Line for real time security alerts
Kolkata Metro is set to install 1678 high tech cameras along the Blue Line. The upgraded surveillance system will send real time alerts to the Railway Protection Force and significantly boost commuter safety.
Kolkata Metro authorities have announced a major security upgrade for the Blue Line with the installation of 1678 high resolution CCTV cameras across stations and platforms. The initiative aims to modernise surveillance operations and create a safer environment for daily commuters.
The new system will integrate intelligent monitoring features that can detect unusual behaviour, unattended objects, crowd surges and potential emergencies. Once an alert is triggered, the information will be sent instantly to the control room and the Railway Protection Force, enabling faster and more accurate responses.
Metro officials explained that the cameras will be placed strategically across entry gates, concourses, escalators, ticket counters, platforms and train interior points. The focus is on ensuring complete coverage in areas where crowd movement is high or where security threats are more likely.
The upgraded system will also help with operational efficiency. By tracking crowd flow, authorities can manage platform control more effectively during peak hours. It will also support emergency protocols by providing live visual feedback during evacuation or rescue efforts.
The initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance safety and passenger experience across the Metro network. With rising footfall on the Blue Line, authorities believe that advanced surveillance will play a crucial role in preventing incidents and improving overall commuter confidence.
Installation work will begin soon and is expected to be completed in phases. Once fully operational, the network of 1678 cameras will form one of the most comprehensive metro surveillance systems in the country.
