Delhi’s air quality worsens as AQI crosses 440, authorities enforce GRAP IV restrictions
Delhi’s air quality has significantly worsened with the Air Quality Index crossing 440, prompting authorities to implement GRAP IV restrictions. Measures include stricter vehicle controls, limitations on construction, and actions to curb pollution as residents face hazardous conditions.
Delhi’s air pollution has reached hazardous levels with the Air Quality Index rising above 440 in multiple areas. In response, authorities have activated the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) at level IV to address rising pollution and protect public health. The move signals serious concern as poor air quality poses risks especially for children, elderly people and individuals with respiratory conditions.
Under GRAP IV, stricter measures have been put into effect across the city. One of the key steps includes tighter checks on vehicle emissions with an emphasis on older and high-polluting cars. Authorities are increasing random pollution checks and encouraging use of public transport to reduce the number of private vehicles on the road.
Construction activity has also been restricted. Dust from construction sites contributes significantly to particulate matter in the air, and under the new curbs, many projects may face limited operations unless they adopt enhanced dust control measures such as water sprinkling and covering of raw materials.
In addition, certain outdoor activities and sports events may be paused or relocated to indoor venues to minimise exposure to poor air. Schools are being advised to adjust outdoor schedules and keep children indoors during peak pollution hours.
Authorities emphasise that these steps are part of the broader GRAP strategy which escalates measures based on air quality severity. Residents are urged to wear masks when stepping out, use air purifiers where possible and limit strenuous outdoor activity until conditions improve.
Environmental experts say that while immediate measures can help, long term solutions require cooperation from citizens and industry. Reducing emissions from vehicles, improving public transport, controlling dust and enforcing industrial standards are all part of a sustained effort to improve air quality.
With the AQI still trending upward, officials are watching conditions closely and may enact additional restrictions under GRAP if needed. For now residents are being advised to take precautions and follow public health recommendations as the city contends with severe pollution levels.
