Australia Announces Champions Trophy 2025 Squad
Australia has unveiled its 15-member preliminary squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be led by Pat Cummins. Despite concerns over injuries, both Cummins, nursing an ankle injury, and Josh Hazlewood, recovering from a calf strain, have been named in the lineup. Teams have until February 12 to make any changes to the squad.
Joining Cummins and Hazlewood are experienced players like Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc, with Sean Abbott being the notable absentee. Jake Fraser-McGurk, yet to establish himself in the national setup, has also been left out. Instead, Matt Short and Aaron Hardie received their maiden call-ups for an ICC event, adding fresh energy to the team.
Chief selector George Bailey emphasized the squad’s versatility and experience, stating, “This is a balanced squad with the core having participated in major tournaments and recent series. It offers flexibility depending on opposition and conditions in Pakistan.”
Short will likely open alongside Travis Head, replacing David Warner, while Josh Inglis or Alex Carey will take on wicketkeeping duties. The squad also includes dynamic all-rounders Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Aaron Hardie, providing depth in both batting and bowling.
Australia is placed in Group B alongside England, Afghanistan, and South Africa. They will kick off their campaign on February 22 against England in Lahore. With a mix of seasoned campaigners and promising newcomers, the team looks poised for a strong showing in the tournament.
