Rohit Sharma Climbs to Third in ICC ODI Rankings
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has climbed to third place in the latest ICC ODI rankings for batters, thanks to his match-winning 76 off 83 balls in the Champions Trophy final. Despite an underwhelming tournament leading up to the final, where he managed just 104 runs in four matches, Rohit delivered under pressure against New Zealand, securing India’s title win.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli, who had a strong tournament including a century against Pakistan, dropped two places to fifth. Kohli struggled in the final, scoring just one run, which impacted his ranking. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Babar Azam retained his second spot, while India’s Shubman Gill continued to dominate as the No. 1 ODI batter. The top three—Gill (784 points), Babar (770 points), and Rohit (756 points)—are separated by just 14 rating points, making the competition for the top position intense.
New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who was named Player of the Tournament, made a significant jump, rising 14 places to reach 14th. Ravindra was the highest run-scorer in the tournament with 263 runs in just four matches, including two centuries. Meanwhile, Glenn Phillips, known for his exceptional fielding and useful batting contributions, moved up six spots to 24th. South Africa’s David Miller, who scored a crucial century in the semifinal against New Zealand, also climbed five places to 26th.
Among Indian batters, Shreyas Iyer retained his eighth position, maintaining his status as India’s highest run-getter in the tournament. However, KL Rahul dropped one place to 16th. Despite playing key finishing roles in India’s wins against Australia and New Zealand, Rahul’s individual scores were not substantial enough to keep him in the top 15.
With the race for the top ranking heating up, all eyes will be on upcoming ODI series to see if Rohit Sharma or Babar Azam can dethrone Shubman Gill as the world’s No. 1 batter.
